Boxted Hall weddings: The Ultimate Guide to your wedding photography

There is doubt about it, Boxted Hall is stunning. It’s got the whole 14th-century manor house vibe, complete with a proper moat and 250 acres of Suffolk countryside. But the best thing about it? Despite looking incredibly grand, it doesn't feel stuffy. It feels like a massive, exclusive house party where you actually get to hang out with your favourite people for the weekend.

If you’re planning a wedding here, you’re in for a treat. As a local photographer based just down the road in Bury St Edmunds, it’s one of my favourite venues to shoot.

My whole philosophy is simple: you're here to celebrate, not to spend hours staring awkwardly into my lens. You have fun, and I’ll make sure it looks gorgeous.

Here is my honest guide to getting the best photos out of your day at Boxted Hall, completely stress-free.

Instead of dragging you away to a list of cliché photo locations or making you stand by a specific tree for an hour, my approach is completely different. I prefer to let your day happen naturally.

Boxted Hall is massive—you’ve got the Suffolk parkland, a stunning walled garden, and that beautiful moated manor house backdrop. But the best spot for your photos isn't a specific coordinate on a map; it's wherever you two happen to be laughing, breathing in the moment, and catching up away from the crowd.

Here is how I actually handle your photos on the day:

• Chasing the Light, Not a Checklist: Rather than forcing photos at a specific spot because a brochure said so, I look for where the light is best at that exact time of day. If the sun is hitting a random patch of grass in the parkland beautifully, that’s where we’ll go.
• The 15-Minute Escape: I won’t steal you away from your guests for hours. We’ll slip away for just 15 minutes while your guests are mingling on the lawns. It gives you a chance to breathe and actually be together while I get those natural, relaxed portraits.
• Documenting the Real Stuff: Most of my favourite shots from Boxted Hall weddings happen when you don’t even know I'm looking. It’s the tight hugs during the drinks reception, the chaos of the confetti line, and the absolute energy on the dance floor later on.

Because Boxted Hall gives you exclusive use of the house (including 13 bedrooms), the whole day has a really natural rhythm.

• The Morning: There’s plenty of space for everyone to get ready without stepping on each other's toes, which keeps the morning chill and clutter-free.
• The Ceremony: Boxted Hall gives you a choice of the Trinity Church at the top of the grounds or a more informal, celebrant led ceremony on the main lawn. Both are beautiful options and being on site allows for less stress without the transport logistics. 
• The Drinks Reception: Guests can spill out onto the lawns for champagne and garden games. This is a part of the day I love capturing, wandering around catching the real, joyful, and slightly chaotic moments while you actually enjoy your party.
• Golden Hour: If the weather gods are on our side, the open parkland to the west gets beautiful, unobstructed light just as the sun goes down. We'll pop out for 5 minutes between courses or before the evening party starts to catch it.

• Go big on the confetti: Get the lightweight, biodegradable dried petals—they float in the air longer, which gives me more time to capture those big, laughing expressions.

• Look at the history: The house has been in the same family since 1398, and the walls are lined with generations of portraits. They add a brilliant, quirky texture to the background of your indoor photos if the weather turns very "British."

• Forget the checklist: The best photos don't come from a rigid list of Pinterest poses. They happen when you're laughing, chatting, and completely forgetting that I'm holding a camera.

Capacity: Up to 80 guests for indoor ceremonies and seated meals, up to 120 for buffet-style receptions (or up to 500+ with a marquee on the lawn). Overnight accommodation for up to 26 guests.
